The quantitative aptitude section of the SSC CGL exam includes many important topics like- ratio and proportion,simple and compound interest, profit and loss, time and work, time and distance,mixture and allegations, algebra, number series, percentage, average etc.

Number Series or NS, as is commonly referred to, is one of the most important topics of Quantitative Aptitude section of SSC CGL examination. This topic always has a high weightage in the exam which means more marks.

But the problem is that it consumes a lot of time, and thereby leaving only a fraction of time for other questions in the section. In a way Number Series can make or break your final scores and sectional cutoffs and ultimately be the difference between a name in the selection list or in the registrations list for the next exam.

In the SSC CGL Exam, Questions on Number Series are asked in both Tier 1 And Tier 2 exam. In this article we will discuss about tips and tricks to solve Number Series Questions.But before that first let us know what actually are Number series based questions.

 

What are “Number Series” questionstips to solve Number Series questions SSC CGL

As the name suggests, number series based questions contain a series of interconnected numbers. The connection is based on a pattern that follow a logical rule which is based on elementary arithmetic. Your task is to identify the pattern by analyzing the given initial sequence . Once you have identified this pattern, you can easily predict the next number of that pattern or sequence.

It looks easy but in reality is not that much. The reason being the difficulty in predicting the logic behind the sequence.The difficulty level of these questions can be  increased in two ways; firstly making the logic behind the sequence less trivial, which in turn will demand high attention and even a pinch of creativity, and secondly positioning the missing number at an early stage (say only after 1 or 2 numbers) , which in turn will make it difficult to identify the pattern by looking at only 1 or 2 numbers given before the gap.

Common Patterns in “Number Series” Questions

There is no limit as an infinite number of patterns are possible in the Number Series Questions. Following are some of the most common patterns frequently asked in SSC CGL Examination,

Prime Numbers:

In this type, the pattern consists of a series of prime numbers

Example: 2,3,5,7,9

Alternate Prime Numbers

Same as above but using only alternate prime numbers

Example: 2,5,9, 13

Squares/ Cubes:

In this type, the pattern consists of a series of perfect squares or cubes

Example: 8,27,64,125

Patterns in differences:

In this type, the pattern consists of a series where the difference between the number remains constant.

Example:1,4,7,10,13 (here the difference between the numbers is 3, hence the next number will be 16)

Pattern where number is sum of the previous two numbers

In this type, the pattern consists of a series where number is sum of the previous two numbers

Example: 2,3,5,8,13

Pattern where number is product of the previous two numbers

In this type, the pattern consists of a series where number is product of the previous two numbers

Example: 1,2,2,4,8

Odd one out:

In this type, the pattern consists of a series where all but one number is part of a series

Example:  5, 10, 12, 15, 20 (here all numbers except, 12 are multiples of 5)

Pattern where difference between adjacent numbers is increasing/ decreasing by a constant number

In this type, the pattern consists of a series where  difference between adjacent numbers is increasing/ decreasing by a constant number

Example: 1,7,19,37 (here the difference between the numbers is 6,12,18, hence the difference between next numbers has to be 24, which means next number will be 61)

Pattern where adjacent numbers are multiplied in a sequence

In this type, the pattern consists of a series where adjacent number are being multiplied by an increasing/decreasing sequence.

For example – 2, 4, 12, 48… (here the first number is multiplied by 2, the second number by 3 and the third number by 4, hence next number has to be multiplied by 5,which means next number will be 240)

Complex series:

In this type, the pattern consists of a series where differences between numbers is dynamic rather than being fixed, but there still is a clear logical rule.

Example: 4,11,31,90

4*3-1=11

11*3-2=31

31*3-3=90

and hence next number will be 90*3-4=266

Tips and Tricks to Solve “Number Series” questions

Generally 4-5 questions are likely to be asked from the Number Series  in the examination. Follow the tips given below to solve question based on number series

  • Try to observe if there are any familiar numbers in the given series.
  • Familiar numbers are the numbers which which are easy to identify like primes numbers, perfect squares, cubes.
  • If you are unable to find familiar number, Calculate the differences between the numbers and observe the pattern in the differences.
  •   If the differences are growing slowly it might be an addition or subtraction series or If the differences are growing rapidly it might be a square series, cube series, or multiplicative series.
  • If the differences also are not having any pattern then observe every alternate number (ie every 3rd number form a series) for any pattern.
  • The possible cases may be like sum or the average of two consecutive numbers gives 3rd number.
  • If still you do not find any pattern, it signifies that the series follows a complex pattern.
  • Check for cases like multiplying the number and adding/subtracting a constant number from it to reach the pattern.
