How to Crack The Non Verbal Reasoning Section SSC CGL 2016

Dear MockBankers

We hope that you have already started your preparation for SSC CGL Tier 1. We are starting a series of posts about how to prepare for SSC CGL 2016. Today we will take up the Non Verbal Reasoning section of SSC CGL.

First let us give you some info about the reasoning as  a section in SSC CGL

There will be two types of questions in the Reasoning part of SSC CGL namely verbal reasoning and non-verbal reasoning.

Verbal reasoning asked in SSC CGL

It is that part of reasoning in which concepts are framed in words. It aims at evaluating ability to think constructively in a logical manner rather than simply cramming the facts and words.

Non verbal reasoning  asked in SSC CGL

It is that part of reasoning in which concepts are framed as visual information.

In non verbal reasoning, instead of words and numbers, diagrams are used for expressing ideas. It tests your ability to understand and analyse visual information and solve problems using visual reasoning. For example: identifying relationships, similarities and differences between shapes and patterns, recognizing visual sequences and relationships between objects, and remembering these.

SSC CGL Non verbal reasoning General Tips:

When it comes to value of Non Verbal Section in the Reasoning section in SSC CGL, majority of candidates feel that they will not be able to attend these type of questions. The reason being, they don’t have any strategy to attempt such type of problems. To get through these questions,  you not only need good practice but also a smart strategy. Hence we will try to help you carve out a brilliant strategy to win over the Non Verbal Reasoning part of SSC CGL.

To be successful in a non-verbal reasoning test one must be aware about the different types of questions likely to be asked in the exam. Basically each question asked in the Non Verbal Reasoning Section will have around 4-5 images and based on those images, you have to select one option (which also will be an image).

keep some basic things in mind:

  1. See how objects relate to each other
  2. Apply logical deduction skills
  3. Understand concepts such as symmetry and rotation

SSC CGL Non verbal reasoning Type of Questions:

There can be various types of questions that are likely to be asked in the examination.

They can be the outline shape, the fill or even the direction of the shape. The shape may be rotated or inverted, may have different layers. It can even increase or decrease in size. To solve such problems you need to be highly  disciplined and systematic, to isolate each element of the sequence or pattern. This in turn will rule out the options one-by-one.

So carefully study the explanations and examples given below for each type.

SSC CGL Non verbal reasoning: Series Based Questions

This is the most common Non Verbal reasoning problem which is based on continuation of figures. You will be provided with a series of images following a certain sequence. you have to choose one of the image from the set of options which follows the same sequence

Type1 : Finding the next figure based questions.

In these questions, approx 4-5 problem figures are generally given. You have to observe the pattern followed by the se problem figures and find out one of the answer figure from the options which continues the same pattern.

Example:

The figures given below follow a series. Out of these figures A, B,C and D which figure will replace the question mark so that the series remains continued?

Solution: In each next figure the already presents lines start to deplete with the figures at their end being deleted. Also a new line is added with titled lined at its ends. The titled lines increase in each figure. Hence, the correct answer should be option (A).

Type2 : Finding the missing figure based questions.

These question are similar to the above question, but in them one figure from between the five problem figures is not given. You have to observe the pattern followed by these problem figures and find out one of the answer figure from the options which follows the same pattern.

Example:

In the following question what will come in place of the question mark so that the figures are in series.

Solution: The figures become half and become detached in the alternative figures. Hence the question make will be replaced by two rectangles aligned horizontally and at a distance from each other.

SSC CGL Non verbal reasoning: Analogy Based Questions

Analogy means‘relationship’. In these type of  problems, you will be given a pair of related figures and you have to find a similar relationship  between two other figures by selecting one of them from the options. The questions on analogy are further classified as follow:

These questions contain a pair of problem figures followed by 4-5  answer figures. From these two figures, in the second pair of problem figures one figure will be missing. You have to choose an answer figure in such a way that a relation between the two figures of the second problem pair is established.

Example

In the following question the two figures on the left of ‘::’ follow relationship. Which figure should replace the ‘?’ so the figures on the right of ‘::’ should follow the same relationship?

Solution: The First figure has a triangle inside a square. In the figure 2 the square comes inside the triangle, also the square is placed at the center of the triangle. Similarly in the 3rd figure, the triangle is given inside a pentagon. So in figure 4, the pentagon should be inside the triangle and also the triangle should be exactly at the center of the triangle. Hence option (b) is the correct answer.

SSC CGL Non verbal reasoning: Odd One Out Questions

In the problems of Odd one out you will be given a set of figures are given where all except one figures will be having similar features. So, You have to find that figure and mark it as an option.

Example

In The following question four figures have been shown. Out of the four, three figures are similar while one is different in some manner. Find The odd one out.

Solution: In each of the above figures the shaded part is aligned to x – axis or horizontal, except in figure (A) where the shaded part is vertical or aligned to y – axis. Hence figure (A) is odd one out.

SSC CGL Non verbal reasoning: Mirror Image Based Questions

Mirror Image or horizontal Plane is a new addition part in non-verbal reasoning,

Have you ever seen your face in the mirror ?
The simple logic is that in a mirror the right hand becomes left and the left hand becomes right (the top upper level and down lower level remains same.). Just keep this much in mind and it will do the trick and

SSC CGL Non verbal reasoning: Water Image Based Questions

The concept of Water Images is also a new addition in the non verbal reasoning section and is same as Mirror Images concept.

Have you ever seen your self in  a lake or a river?

The simple logic is that in a Water image, the top and bottom part of the images are changed whereas left and right side of image remain same.

Friends this is it for SSC CGL Non Verbal Reasoning.
